After Log in to your Gmail account go to Chat and SMS option.Now click on the option next to your profile picture (shown in the below image).It would open a pop up window.Now add contact to your gmail account.It would prompt you to add an email address to invite for chat.If you want to send message to a person who is already in your gmail account then you can skip this step.

Just move your cursor on to a contact and you will see a pop window like the below one.
If you are chatting with the person for the first time then you have send chat invitation.
If this is not the first time you are chatting with the person then simply click on chat sms option available.
Now a chat box would open. On the right side of the chat box ,More option will be available, just click on it.
Now add the mobile number and save it.
Now a window chat would open with sms enabled.Now you can send sms to that particular number for free.
What is SMS Credit ?
Initially you will we given 50 Credits.For every SMS sent 1 credit would be deducted.If SMS Credit becomes Zero then it takes 24 hours to get back your credit.
